Mr Nathan Brown is a graduate of Western Carolina University and the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Along with music education, he also completed a year of training in band instrument repair at Western Iowa Technical Community College.  In spring 2018, Mr. Brown just finished his third year as Director of Bands at Bandys High School.  Within these three years, the band has had considerable growth and received superior ratings at MPA, Solo and Ensemble festivals, and success at marching band and winter guard events. Mr. Brown was also selected as the First Year Teacher of the Year for Bandys High School, Outstanding Student in Music at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and Outstanding Prospective Teacher Award at Western Carolina University.

In addition to being a band director, Mr. Brown is on staff with Revelation Percussion, which most recently was a finalist at Winter Guard International World Championships. He is also an active percussion arranger and has written for programs in the Southeast and Midwest. His professional affiliations include National Association for Music Educators and North Carolina Music Educators Association.

NBHS is proud to foster a music program which strives to mold its students into not only talented musicians, but responsible young adults who aspire to become involved in a community rich in the cultural arts.

The NBHS music curriculum offers Marching Band, Concert Band, Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, Percussion Ensemble, Pit Orchestra, AP Music Theory and Winter Guard. Established in 1959, the NBHS Band’s success is built upon years of tradition, knowledge and the high expectations set in place by several beloved former directors. Wallace Brown set the standard upon which the band program’s rich history of success thrived for 31 years. Upon Mr. Brown’s retirement, D. Sanford Boone stepped into the director’s role. Mr. Boone not only continued Mr. Brown’s high standards and principles but raised the competitive bar even higher, helping the band achieve even greater success until his retirement in 2012. Andrew Shelton carried on the tradition of excellence in music education for our NBHS students from 2012-2017.  Richard Bordeman served one year as Blackhawk Band Director in 2017-18, followed by Nathan Brown who took over the reins of Band Director in summer of 2018.
