Weaverville, NC – The North Buncombe High School “Marching Blackhawks” band and guard welcome new Director of Bands Rick Bordeman. Mr. Bordeman has been teaching band to 5th thru 12 graders for 7 years. He is a 20-year veteran, serving 4 years on active duty with the Marine Corps Band in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii from 1996-2000 and currently serves with the 208th Army Reserve Band in the Charlotte area. Both bands travel extensively and include concert, marching and jazz bands. He was raised in Texas but has been living in Charlotte since 2003. Mr. Bordeman was hired at North Buncombe High School when the previous director, Andrew Shelton left to become the Director of Bands at Mars Hill University.

The Marching Blackhawks (Band Boosters) Co-President Ben Whitmire said: “We welcome Mr. Bordeman with open arms to this very special program! Our previous Director, Andrew Shelton, left the program on an enormous high note and for that we will be forever grateful. I have no doubt that Mr. Bordeman will continue the high standard of excellence and bring his own style to the Marching Blackhawk Band. The students who returned this fall will have the chance to build upon the past and experience new and exciting things going forward. The parents and band boosters are super excited and cannot wait to kick off the season!”

The Marching Blackhawks have received numerous “Superior” and honors in concert and marching activities. The Blackhawk Marching Band has been invited to perform in Normandy France in 2019. The National D-day 75th Year Committee personally invited our high school band as one of ten bands across the nation to participate in the 2019 D-Day Memorial Parade. The North Buncombe High School Band will have the opportunity to tour historic battlefields and experience history first-hand. This event has been recognized by numerous veterans’ associations, community organizations, and military and government officials and will provide the students and spectators an opportunity to salute those men and women who have and continue to sacrifice for our nation.
